Problems getting to Mt. Baker

Just a heads up for those who may wish to drive to Mt. Baker Ski Area this early season.  The state DOT announced that they will be closing one lane of Highway 542 (the Mt. Baker Highway, a 2 lane road) for the next month just east of Deming at MP 14 to fix a culvert damaged in the big rains we had recently.  This is in addition to the two places east of Glacier that are down to one lane as well.  While the Glacier closings are a minor problem the one near Deming will be a big PITA.  This is in a more heavily traveled area and, especially on the weekdays, west bound traffic is fairly heavy in the morning which will make a big bottleneck.  Give some extra time to your trip if you go this way.  There is no reasonable route around the closure.  They say it should last a month.

Canadians crossing the border at Abbotsford/Sumas will be unaffected by the Deming closure.

Here is the solution to the problem.  Scroll down to the first video on Mt. Baker's snow report page and Duncan Howett will take you through the procedure.  Basically, it's to turn right on the Truck Road, follow it to the Mosquito Lake Rd., turn left and it takes you back to the Mt. Baker Highway in about 1/2 a mile.  Easy and much faster.
