Humor me for a moment.
Is the skier in this picture assuming proper alignment to achieve the task at hand? (For the record, I am not a fan of the word "balance" either)
If (as most of you probably did) you allowed your brain to assume continuation of velocity (motion) then yes, she is (IMO) doing a pretty good job.
However, if you take away that assumption of velocity continuation then what?
The good news is she only as a few inches from the snow.
So this whole thread (as many do) needs context when we respond. How we align is dependent on the dynamic forces we are dealing with at any particular moment in a turn.
