Hi. I'm hoping to gather some information and recommendations to help us decide where to go skiing in early February.
We only have a long weekend, 3 days to ski - Thursday, Friday, Saturday. We are travelling from Chicago, and take a ski trip maybe once a year. We have been to Utah (Brighton and Solitude) and to Colorado (Beaver Creek). Two of us prefer Blue runs, and two prefer Black. We want to stay slope-side for the convenience since we only have 3 days. With the kids, we don't need fancy restaurants or hopping bars, just good skiing, decent food, relaxing atmosphere, etc. We are not hard-core skiers (we will be sticking to the marked trails), no fancy outfits, we'll be renting skis.
From my research both places have similar amount of snow, ratio of green:blue:black runs, beautiful scenery, vertical, etc...
Alta is appealing because of the ease of traveling from Chicago to SLC. The ski-only rule is a plus too. The included meals also seem to add to the ease factor. But the price tag is HIGH.
Grand Targhee is appealing because it seems much less expensive, and is always at the top of the 'uncrowded' lists. It wouldn't be fun to spend the 3 days waiting in lift lines, and I don't need a 4 course meal every night. But Jackson is a more difficult flight.
How crowded is Alta? Is GT really not crowded?
How does the scenery compare? Weather/temperatures?
What do you recommend?
Thanks for your help!
