Whitetail PA improvements for 2015-16

Sounds like people who like Exhibition at Whitetail may get to ski on it earlier than past years.  In addition to getting new rental inventory and paving Lot 1, Whitetail continues to add snow guns.

From SkiPA for 2015-16:

This year’s snowmaking improvements include 17 new fully automated Techno Alpin Fan Guns. The majority of these guns will be placed on the Exhibition Trail. Our new fan guns will allow us to open the Exhibition Trail sooner and to resurface the moguls on the trail during the season as we see fit and as weather conditions dictate. Our experienced skiers and riders will truly love this new capability which we will be adding to our arsenal of snowmaking tools. We are also in the process of automating the Fan Guns on Drop In which will assist us with resurfacing the snow on this trail as well. Other Snow Guns being added to the mountain are some additional HKD guns on the Snowpark Trail. Both the TechnoAlpin and the HKD Snow Guns are very energy efficient helping us in our “green” objectives to consume less electrical energy as we make snow.

Those two trails are the ones with the biggest snow accumulation every year so I see this as more of a water husbanding and electricity saving move on WT's part.

That said, those two trails are also where we were getting daily core shots last early and mid-season, so improvement is quite welcome.

Do you remember when Exhibition opened last season?  I spent a midweek day at Whitetail in early Jan a couple years ago and Exhibition was definitely not ready for prime time yet.

When Massanutten started adding automatic guns several years ago, it made a noticeable difference during early season in terms of how much snowmaking happened as soon as the right wet bulb conditions were met for starting to build a base in Nov or early Dec.

I strongly suspect that was during the nightmare season when there was basebuilding on the green runs in the middle of Jan.     I'm sorry I don't remember when Exh.  and Drop In opened - @marigee and @Rusty would know better.

Yeh, that's what the Wintergreen fans have been saying about the system there too.     I wonder what the snow quality will be like; if it's styrofoamy like at Roundtop during cold spells I might just finally switch to 80mm+ as daily drivers.

The new snow guns will definitely improve coverage on Exhibition.  They will be able to produce more snow ( and better quality snow) with less water. The old guns weren't working well and last season sometimes produced very wet snow, which then made the slope icy.  When they put the new guns on Fanciful a few years ago the trail went from being the last opened (with not very good coverage) to being one of the first Blue runs opened (after Angel Drop) and one of the last to close.  The snow quality improved too adn it has become my favorite run on the front side.

The 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons were very warm and Whitetail didn't open until early January during the 2011-12 season and late December for the 2012-13 season.  The snow coverage was minimal during early and late season, hence all the rocks poking through.

Rumor has it that Whitetail has regraded the top of Snow Park to make it easier for skiers to get off the lift - much flatter exit area.  I will know more when we have our annual on-the-hill training mid-November.
