I don't agree at all. And not simply because I am a moderator (although not very active).
I think a little historical perspective helps. I was one of the original participants in rec.skiing.alpine (rsa) back in the early 90's. It was completely unmoderated and devolved into a viper pit after a few years BUT during the time I was there I met - first virtually and then in person - a number of great people I've known and skied with ever since.
EpicSki developed partly as an alternative to the implosion of rsa and I've been here ever since. I've been here through two or three ownership structures, a bunch of moderation scenarios and philosophies, and a wealth of talented and passionate people who put their hearts into this community. Many (most?) of those people received negligible compensation but still helped EpicSki grow and thrive because of their love of the sport and the people involved.
I think the loss of Phil and Tricia is a terrible shame. I know how much they've put into this place and I know their guiding hand(s) will be sorely missed. I don't know any more than any of you about what has happened and what might happen in the future.
But I do know that the value and strength of EpicSki lies more in the collective knowledge and passion of the members, not in any one or two individuals.
I'm going to remain an active member of EpicSki as long as I see that knowledge and passion still expressed on these pages. I'm also going to remain a moderator (assuming they want to keep me) because I've seen - personally - what can happen to a place like this when a few anonymous internet voices decide to slash and burn through a diverse community.
So, for the time being, I'll continue to participate and I'll continue to moderate. If (when?) the content and feel and stoke of EpicSki loses what brought me here in the first place, I'll look around and probably find some kind of replacement.
'Til then, the jury's out.
