Lange model comparison

Hi Guys

I recently travelled to Maine for a fitting and ended up with Lange RS 130 size 27.5. The fitter has a great reputation and I am very pleased with the result (very tight fit - which I wanted so that they will be good once packed out).

I am planning to do a little boot packing/skinning this year, which will be mainly at resorts (Sugarloaf has a lot of wind holds), and had been planning to also get a pair of boots with a walk mode.  I wanted ones that are good on the downhill, so that if I'm travelling without my kids and may do a bit of hiking or skinning, this is the only boot I'd bring.  I have the chance to get a pair of Lange XT 130's (not the LV model) from a fellow racer parent in another province for a very good price.  Only thing is they are size 26.5 and I can't try them first (no local shops carry them as well).

Do you think that size would work for me given the extra width? I thought I had read somewhere that in the same last and size, the XT was a little more generous in volume than the RS.  Without footbeds my feet are (as of this morning) 279 and 283mm.  I'd say I have not quite 15mm behind my heel in the shell of the 27.5 RS.

I'm not in a rush to find the second boots, but if it seems that this would work, I'd like to not miss the opportunity.

Thank you for any advice

the lower shell of the XT low volume is the same as your RS, so based on the fit of your RS boot could you tolerate 10mm less toe room, if so then go for it (remember that you would be skinning/boot packing up in these and most likely kicking steps)

I highlighted the 15mm part of your post----a lot depends on the "not quite" part of your description of the shell fit---here's an idea---pick up a piece of 1/2 inch CPVC pipe at your local building supply store, it will be exactly 15mm on the outside  and you should be able to tell if you have a good shell fit in the 27.5.  As CEM said if you have a full 15mm in the 27.5 you will have 5mm in the 26.5 which is a very tight race fit in an alpine boot.  If you go for it you will need to trim your toe nails way back and be prepared to spend $$$ on getting the boot punched out.

happy skiing
