GS Speed Suit

My 15 year old son is joining his high school ski team this season. It appears that most of the kids use a padded GS speed suit for SL and GS.

Does anyone have suggestions for finding a 'reasonably' GS (padded) speed suit? Used is fine as well. As a point of reference he has tried on a new Spyder padded GS on he fit in a large.. The medium was to restrictive. He is 6'0 and 145 lbs.

I'm 6'0, 165, wear a Spyder M. Racing suits are supposed to be restrictive, meaning the Spandex gets stretched so you present a smooth surface to the air, feel some compression against your muscles. Should take a while to work on, not just pull on and zip. Used suits are likely to be a bit bigger because they've been stretched some already. Plus, he's going to keep growing a bit, so this will not be his last suit. Get something that fits now.

You can find a lot of excellent suits that are cheaper than Spyder and just as well constructed; Karbon for instance.

Check eBay.

M vs. L depends on where it's restrictive with torso length being the most likely factor. The zipper itself doesn't stretch so if the M pulls in the front and makes him walk around like a hunchback, then go for the L.

Most companies tell you to fit for height because zippers don't stretch, the material will. For example, my 18yr old son is 6'3" but only 180lbs but is going into a XXL Karbon this year and has been wearing a XL Spyder for the last 2 years.

We found there to be a very large size range in the POC suits, and they were a little less restrictive than some of the others.  Pads are also removable which is a nice feature.

This! I have used spyder in M, L and XL @ 5'8" and 165#!

I have a new SRD Europa cup series suit with pads in XL for $180 in gear swap here. Great deal!

I'm 5' 10"  175-180 lbs. and have had 2 Spyder XL and just got a Sync XL-all of which are plenty tight. Plan on a little room for layering unless he want to freeze his butt off.

Yes it is! The price of suits seems to have gone up in the last couple of years. If it fits, you probably can't do better.
