Sun Valley 2015-16 meetup dates

Now that Sun Valley is part of the MCP, seems like more Bears will be heading there.  The idea is to post up your dates in this thread with the hopes that people who overlap can take a few runs together or get together for a beer or a meal.  Always fun to meet folks in person.

Perhaps @Bill Miles can keep an eye on the thread.  He's the EpicSki Ambassador for Sun Valley.  If you haven't already checked it out and are don't know much about SV, here's his great Unofficial Guide:

I'll probably be at Sun Valley with a couple friends in late Jan.  We are starting in SLC and doing some skiing at MCP destinations before the Aspen Gathering.

@Pete No. Idaho , @rpratt , @Rubberduck , @Lofcaudio : any idea of your dates for Sun Valley yet?

Can't post any dates yet too early.  My plans are to wait till about mid. January and check out where the best Powder is located and then adjust accordingly with the definite goal of being at the Gathering.  Have reservations at an RV park in Carbondale for the night of the 2nd of Feb.

Am flexible on leaving a week or two weeks early and hitting SLC, SV or head east to JH Bridger, Steamboat, Aspen.  Just waiting for powder reports.

Love to meet at SV and will do if the snow warrants etc., as stated above.  I will leave home in my Camper and will be on the road for 2 to 6 weeks chasing powder.   I was going to wait till I get older but crap it happened.

Love to make some turns and :beercheer: tip a few with ya.   Pete

No idea yet when I'll get to SV.  Christmas is Whister, will probably do 1-2 long weekends in SV but when will depend on kid/work schedules.  President's weekend most likely, though.

My SLC/SV trip has tentatively been pushed forward to accommodate my wife's schedule which puts me on the Sun Valley slopes on January 8th and 9th (my 44th birthday).  Unfortunately, those days are Friday and Saturday, so will witness firsthand just how crowded Sun Valley can get.

It won't be crowded at all. ITt might be pretty cold though.

PSIA-NW is holding their Spring Symposium at Sun Valley April 8-10, so I might be there.  Don't know that I'd have time to meet up with anyone, but who know?

What do you mean by "pretty cold"?  Teens during the day?  Or single digits with wind?

Teens during the day most likely. Single digits with wind could happen. Overnight lows might reach -10 or so.

Aah, like northeast cold.  Good to know.

I looked up the January 9 weather for the last 5 years. Coldest low/high was 6/15, warmest was 25/38. Also, some years we get the biggest storms in late December or early January. As always, YMMV.

We're debating between whether to hit Jackson Hole or Sun Valley first before arriving Pocatello, ID for Christmas Eve.   It's a shorter drive from JH to Pocatello, so we're favoring SV first 12/19-21 unless advised otherwise.  Skiing 12/20,21, would love to catch a few turns if anyone is available.

Our first ski trip to SV pre-Christmas last year was a major success, even better than Mrs Grump promised.  What a treat to have SV on MCP this year!

As a side note, we foolishly attempted to pay Ernest Hemingway homage at his burial site after 8 inch snowfall then and of course couldn't find it.  We will try again this time.:)

I'm glad to see that Sun Valley is getting snow.  Things should be in good shape for my trip next month.

Did you go to SV?

Just updating on this, I'll be in Sun Valley skiing Friday 1/15 thru Monday 1/18, although at best can only ski a half day Monday before heading to Hailey for my flight back to SF.  But if anyone wants to meet up on the mountain Friday, Saturday, Sunday drop me a note.

I hope I'll get back there at least once more in February or March, but grabbing the long MLK weekend opportunity while I can.

Later,

Bob

Made it to Ketchum today after an early flight from the east coast to meet up with friends.  We'll be skiing Sun Valley Jan. 27-28 before heading back to SLC.  Anyone around?

Although the conditions were not ideal today, my friends and I had an great introduction to Sun Valley today.  We all agree we want to do a return trip in the future that lasts a bit longer.

There was an inversion so the temps were in the high 20s on the upper mountain, which is where we spent most of the day.  It turns out that the free mountain tour at 10:30 is often given by Allan Patzer, Director of Skiing.  He has been at Sun Valley for almost 50 years.  We learned all sorts of fun history, as well as about the trails and various areas for future reference.  Guess we asked good questions or something because he had lunch with the three of us after the tour was over, and took a few more runs in the afternoon.  Lots of good stories.  Highly recommend the tour.  Pretty clear that SV is working very hard to re-establish itself as a premier ski destination.

And updating this, I'll be back in Sun Valley Feb 12-15 (President's weekend), skiing with my daughter this time. If anyone's around that weekend and wants someone to ski a few runs with drop me a line.
