I'd never seen it before either but that siphon brewing technique has been around since the 1830's. Apparently it largely disappeared in the 1950's.

Yes I do. It got so serious so fast and I ended up only buying a coffee bean grinder until that 2nd mortgage goes through to get a real machine!

My favorite coffee ever was at Philz coffee in Palo Alto this summer. Best.coffee.ever. Worth a trip if you haven't tried it.

I'm a coffee addict from birth.  I remember my childhood in Cuba with almost every corner having the huge Italian espresso machines that were taller than I was, which you still see in many corner coffee shops in the Miami area.  We settled in New England, where espresso was a moniker for the morning commuter train and not a dark, concentrated coffee drink with the beautiful crema on top.  Then in my travels in Italy, Switzerland and the rest of Europe, my thirst for this heavenly concoction rekindled, came back to the US to find out that espresso had come of age and once again, it was coffee utopia.

 

The best low-price espresso maker I saw was a Saeco sold through Starbucks.  I had one, I gave one to my cousin, and mine was utterly destroyed in one of my government moves.  The one I gave my cousin originally cost me $275, now sells for $325.  I replaced mine with a KitchenAid Pro ($1,000) with a dual boiler and kept that at my ski condo, it made superb coffee.  When I sold my condo at Snowshoe, it went with it and three years ago, as we headed up to New Hampshire, I made the move to a Salvatore (http://www.salvatore-espresso.com).  Salvatore is made in Solvang, CA.  They are only US-manufactured machines, each one is hand made by an Italian family.  Their service is outstanding and personalized - I had mine serviced already (my fault for not cleaning it properly as much as I use it) and they did an excellent job.  The semi goes for $2,300 and is personalized.  I think this is the last espresso machine I will buy.  They have fully automatic machines but if I'm going to brew espresso, I don't want the machine to tell me what to do, so I got the semi auto.  The Salvatore is professional grade and I leave it on for weeks at a time, so much that I have a UPS surge protector and battery backup to protect it from power surges.

 

I can't imagine a day of skiing without espresso...

My Aeropress just arrived in the mail today. For scientific reasons, I picked up some McCafe beans to see how they'd taste compared to my usual morning brew.

I ground the beans to an espresso consistancy and used one scoop. The water was 202F which is hotter than they recommend, but the reviews I've seen say hotter is better. I pressed it for about 10-15 seconds... I didn't count.

The coffee was good, but not life-changing... but I'll chalk that up to not being a huge coffee nut. I'm glad I didn't drop the $200 on the auto-drip. Still, it was good enough to retire the old Black and Decker POS.

It would be good to have this thing perfected for Christmas for our guests. My mom and her boyfriend are huge coffee drinkers and love a strong cup. In fact, I picked them up one as well as a gift.

Any tips?
