FIS RH 2013 race helmets--which, if any, are best?

Thread Starter

There are a handful of helmets meeting the new FIS standards for U14 and up racers.  Wading through the marketing stuff.  Are they all basically the same or are some markedly better/safer than others.

From what I can tell, these are the models that have the sticker this year:

The Briko has what they call "Protetto" which is a panel in the rear that is suppose to increase protection in the back of the head and reduce incidence of concussion..

The POC helmets boast a lot of technology based on maintaining protection after multiple impacts and the top of the line expensive ($380) Orbic Comp adds VPD in the front.

So, if you fall backward you go with the Briko and if you fall forward the POC?

The others' websites just say they meet the FIS standards.

Any of you experts have any recommendations or insight?

I've tried most, but not all of the helmets you listed, and a few others.  I think they are all pretty good quality.

Fit and finish and attention to detail is a little nicer on some,  Briko in particular are quite nice.

Most important thing is to find one that fits your head well- the best helmet in the world won't give much protection if it does not fit right.

Helmet interior head shape varies quite a bit between makers (as does human head shape) and even between different models of the same make.

There's no substitute for being able to try on the helmet--it's well worth the money to find a local dealer who stocks the helmet.

They all meet the same standard, so whatever fits your head the best will be the best helmet for you. They are all equally safe.

I personally like the POC line with VPD (mainly done for gate impacts) as I find them well built and very clean in design.

However you can't go wrong with any of them.

Anyone familiar with the Briko Vulcano able to comment on ventilation? Moving from a Forerunner, the Vulcano fits well, but concerned about it being hot. Thanks.
