I'll have to keep an eye on Appalachian!  I am up in Smugglers' Notch for a ski week with my wife and daughter, but would LOVE to get one more day in after we return!

How is the snow holding up at Smuggs?  The EpicSki New England Gathering is going to be there and Stowe this weekend.  I think they plan to be at Smuggs on Saturday.

Considering the horrendous winter they have had, they have done a nice job. Hard pack with some icy spots Monday and Tuesday, 4-6 inches of wetter snow on the hill greeted us Wednesday, then a few dryer inches today. Even opened one of the glades today! Wind blew quite a bit off the trails this afternoon, but had a great day! Forecast has the dreaded r*** word for overnight and tomorrow ... we shall see!

Unfortunately, this is not a post about snow.  It's a plea to help people in WV who have been devastated by recent flash floods.  The death toll is over 20 and likely to rise.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/28/us/west-virginia-flooding-weather/index.html

"Last week's flooding severely damaged or destroyed more than 1,200 homes, including 500 in Roane County. Kanawaha County had 400 homes and 70 businesses destroyed and 200-300 severely damaged, said Brooke Hylbert, a county spokesman, on Tuesday."

The Red Cross has a special fund for the disaster.

Near the base of Snowshoe is the Elk River River Touring Center.  ERTC offers lodging, food, mountain biking, fishing, XC skiing and a snowboard shop in the winter.  The only connection was by a bridge to RT 219 near Slatyfork.  The bridge was washed away completely.  The rebuilding is going to start immediately for a cost of $65,000.  There is a video showing the rushing waters.  A GoFundMe campaign was started.

“With the bridge totally washed out, and the center pillar (estimated at 35 tons!) moved over 6 feet  by the force of the flood waters (see attached video!), the entire 65’ span of the bridge has to be reconstructed from 219 to the island. Work will be starting immediately, and your assistance will be greatly appreciated!

We have also started a Facebook page for this project, so you can follow the progress and see/share past images of the old bridge!  https://www.facebook.com/ERTCbridgerebuild/
