i am surprised everyone is worried about BMW maintenance costs. They have 4 years free mainenance, including windshield wipers and other things, unless it's something major not covered. Or if you are keeping the car more than 4 years. Price of the car, I understand is high. Yet other cars such as Audi and VW gives only one year. Subaru has no free maintenance at all. I don't see free for Mercedes either.
The vast majority of people keep a new car more than 4 years. The OP has already stated he has a 2002 SAAB which he's not getting rid of, and said he keeps cars for a long time.
One thing I'm not 100% clear on... is the BMW you're looking at equipped with X-Drive? I had assumed it was, but due to some subsequent comments, not entirely sure that's the case. So just wanted to get confirmation. If it isn't, there's no question, the Subaru is the choice if you're bringing it up here to Vermont and the Dacks.
I'd go with the Subaru in any case. Better to maintain, rugged, maintain resale value like a champ. I happen to differ with one comment above. I run all seasons on my Subaru year round, in Vermont. I have no problem whatsoever. In fact, the only time I spun out my Subie was right after I got it, and it had Hakkapeliita's on (which was driver error, I admit). Meanwhile, I see guys driving FWD and RWD cars with snows on them getting stuck constantly. Like getting in and out of driveways and parking spaces stuck. Meanwhile, I'll be parked right next to them, and pull out without even an ounce of wheel slip.
