It's quite obvious with what's been revealed that it was never designed to be a car for carrying skis and kayaks. Rather, it's optimized for loading kids, car seats, strollers, diaper boxes, and lots of random household items (not large furniture). The falcon wing doors and sliding 2nd row of seats are even better for those sorts of things than sliding doors, which were probably a non-starter due to the minivan stigma. The term I've heard elsewhere, which I'm reluctant to use as it's sexist, is MUV = "mom utility vehicle".
They could easily have built a real SUV instead, but obviously it would still have the range problem and lack of superchargers in the wilderness that everyone is complaining about in this thread. So they instead targeted it towards use cases that an EV is better equipped to handle. Smart. They'll probably also have a much easier time selling them this way. There are a lot more suburban famlies with young kids with the means to spend $100k on a high end, trendy, safe, lower-maintenance, more environmentally friendly version of a minivan than there are grizzled outdoor types making 1000 mile road trips into the wilderness who'd be able to spend the same. There are probably 10x as many people who will never need to carry skis or kayaks.
And yes, it is environmentally friendly. Sounds like a few people have been eating up all the FUD spread by the oil and auto industries. No the grid is not clean (obviously), yes lithium mining isn't very green, yes battery disposal (to whatever extent they aren't recycled through Tesla's program) isn't ideal. You can nitpick all you ant, but the facts are that the lifetime footprint of a Tesla car even powered entirely by a coal plant is still cleaner than an equivalent ICE car.
I probably won't be getting a Model X, but that doesn't mean it won't be a great car for the niche it's aimed at. The S is certainly fantastic and I love what Tesla is doing; looking forward to the Model 3, which from what I understand will have a cross-over version, probably without those awful falcon wing doors. :)
