Note: I have made some changes based on suggestions and I wanted to update the original post, but the comments are sometimes based on the older posting.
I am taking a skibatical this coming winter. I have the Mountain Collective Pass and a Sierra at Lake Tahoe Pass with the Powder Alliance add on. My only committed time is 16 days centered around Rogers Pass, BC in the middle of February. I should have about 28 days prior to this (depending on the order I will need at least 3 days for driving) and 40 days after (3-4 days driving minimum). In looking at the ski areas I have passes to, I picture them as puzzle pieces which can be connected in several ways. To simplify I have identified the pieces by letter. If there is more than one area in a letter, I anticipate following the order listed. Because I have so many areas I wish to visit and because they are so far apart geographically the idea of powder chasing does not seem realistic. I will have a choice as to where I start, but once begun I will only realistically be able to extend time in a location or skip over a location.
A: 2 days Aspen
B: 2 days Altabird: 3 days Snowbasin
C: 2 days Sun Valley; 6 days Jackson (have 3 lift ticket and want to do some BC); 3 days Bridger; 3 days Schweitzer
D: 3 days White Water
E: 6 days Asulkan Hut Rogers Pass; 2 days Sunshine/Lake Louise; 8 days with brother (Rogers Pass Day trips/ Revelstoke/ Kicking Horse)
F: 3 days Silver Star; 2 days Whistler; 3 days Stevens Pass
G: 6 days Squaw/Alpine
H: Unlimited Sierra at Tahoe and BC skiing, lets say 10 days
I: 2 days Mammoth
J: 3 days Arizona Snowbowl; Backpack the Grand Canyon 4 days or so
K: 2 days Taos; 3 days Crested Butte
The shortest route to include all areas would be A-K; however since I have some flexibility and want to ski the best snow conditions that is unlikely.
I am locked in to an order of C,E,F,G,H, I. Combinations of A,B,J,K can come prior to C or after I. D can come before or after E.
Feel free to make any comments you want, this is the anonymous internet after all. I know for most this would be too much driving and they would prefer more time at fewer places. Myself, I enjoy driving especially in the West and I like newness and variety.
What would be helpful for me is any insight on the following:
Seasonal comments on A,B,J,K (as a hypothetical example: don't consider Crested Butte early season even if there is heavy snowfall as it takes good depth to open it)
Route selection (example: even though the map shows you can drive through Yellowstone on your way from Jackson to Bozeman, that road is closed instead go …; another ex.: in going from x to y I would not go this way if it is storming bad.)
Hot springs to visit along the way. Even better if they are a mile or 2 ski in to avoid the freaky old naked guy holding a can of bud.
Recommended hostels near any of the ski areas mentioned.
As the trip gets closer I will put up a new thread of my plans and hopefully update it as I go so I can receive/ give information and if I am fortunate ski with some of you folks.
