September Visit to Colorado

So it appears we may be doing a quick week visit to Colorado in September.  Can you guys give a recommendation between Beaver Creek, Vail or Aspen for that time of year?  Cost isn't a huge issue but it's a factor.  It's not a ski trip so we're more interested in stuff to do besides mountain biking.

Thanks!

Which week?

I would pick Aspen first, Vail next.

It depends on what other stuff are you're interested in doing.   All three are great in their own way, and Sept is fantastic!

The aspens in Aspen and the area surrounding it will be spectacular.  There's not as many aspens in Vail/Beaver Creek.  Drive down-valley and head up to Marble as well -- it's spectacular.

Food is also spectacular in Aspen.

Ok, so I'm suggesting Aspen...

(strongly)

True, but it depends on which week. First week, not so much.

I'd pick the 3rd weekend in September to be in Aspen. Colors are usually starting, weathers still good and there's a lot going on with Ruggerfest.

We're somewhat flexible on which week.  Sounds like 3rd week Aspen is the ticket.  :)  Is there a non-busy week in September?  Are there crazy festivals going on that we can avoid?

Recommend any bike rental places?  Prefer a good hardtail.  Thanks!

There are a ton of good bike shops in town.  Four Mountain Sports is owned by the SkiCO, they offers competitive prices and convenience.

Both of you can get the perfect summer package and then you can upgrade to the downhill bike.

Take your wife up on the bus and let her coast back down.

Snowmass also offers a 2 1/2 hour $49 Downhill Clinic. Most of the time, you'll be the only one and privates are $99/hour.

Ride your XC bike out to Snowmass and you can checkout some of the XC stuff.  Then ride Tom Blake or Government back to town.

Town will be fairly busy on weekends, but it's not mobbed.  If you drive up via Independence Pass, traffic won't really be an issue.

Road biking is excellent as well.  Independence Pass, bike path to Glenwood, or to Carbondale and to McClure Pass, or even just the short jaunt to Ashcroft or to Crater Lake (Maroon Bells), all is amazing.  Some of the best road biking in Colorado -- perhaps the reason that Teejay and the guy who can no longer be referred to (LA) spend a considerable amount of time in Aspen...
