I have never seen this much snow this early in the season.  Nothing even close.

I am very close to making Taos definite -- is that week still your plan?

Maybe we can get @near nyquist to join us and throw him down something steep.  Or some of the other Bears who have theoretical Taos interest -- this looks like the year for Taos!

Yup, that week is on. So is the last week of the season 3/27/16 - 4/3/16.

We don't need to throw him. He just have to take a extra step. Gravity is strong with him. :eek:D

If you think I'm a menace on the snow, you ain't seen nothing yet. :eek

Looks like I will be there for a couple of days the last week as well.

Why are there no tracks on that snow in the photos?

Despite the temptation brought on by that picture, Kachina is likely a minefield right now.

I am sure the peak is and early season skiing is the most dangerous skiing. I was more looking at the 1st and 3rd photo thinking there must be some pockets.  No early minefield skiing for me, unlike prior winters I will not be desperate to ski the early season mines as I will have plenty of skiing days.

I'm confused. Which week is door #3, 2/27 or 3/27?

In any case, my wife doesnt want to be in FL on Easter (which is 3/27/2016) so the 2/27 week is looking a lot more likely.

2/27/16.

Sorry for the confusion.

It is November 8th and there is already a cornice forming up on Highline. Insane.

Bowl terrain at Wolf already has a midseason looking cornice, complete with lots of broken- off icebergs.

So is the last week of the season 3/27/16 - 4/3/16.

That time frame is high on our radar.  We get back from Indonesia March 19 and will be looking to make up for lost ski time.  We'll wait to see where the snow is best, but a SW tour is high on Liz' priority list.  She would love to hit Telluride and Wolf also, and anachronism has made Silverton unguided sound intriguing.

Given that Taos ran for a later weekend last year which was below average, how likely do you locals think new management will run another week in a decent year?

One of these days I'm just going to drop everything, bum up and get an unguided season pass to Silverton. I swear...

Tony, it would nice to ski with you and Liz again.

I think they were just testing the water last year about extending the season for another week. Don't think it went over too well.

Most of the southern CO area all close on the same weekend. A good portion of the CO resorts further north close a week later. Doubt they will extend the season unless there is a huge increase of skier interest from the new alliance with MCP.

I have no illusions about remote areas changing their closing date policies due to good snow years.  In the SW only Wolf Creek seems to show flexibility in that regard.  Taos is a different case because:

1) They have new management.

2) That management broke the precedent last year when snow was not all that great.

Taos is not as remote for daytrip/weekenders as CB, Telluride etc.  There is some population base in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

My gut feeling is Taos has max out the local skier for end of season runs. I spent a few end of season weeks there and it's like a ghost town. Even the closing day is lackluster in terms of turn out. It doesn't have the festive atmosphere most other resorts have on closing day. It is more like "Thank God it's over" kind of feeling.

I believe the new management wants to extend the season. That would be a good thing. A lot is riding on the new MCP crowd.

Purgatory also broke the mold last year by extending its season an extra weekend, even though it was a really rough season (I think 150" for the year or thereabouts) and they really didn't have much snow left. This is also very attributable to new management (the deal closed in February 2015) making a statement about more aggressive operations- WRT to opening and closing dates and opening up more terrain as conditions warrant vs. opening as crowds warrant. My take is the extended weekend, which included a day of free operations to all comers and a day where tickets were 2 for $50, was a calculated move to show a change in culture and spur season pass sales.

I heard 2 separate conversations with people at Wolf on Saturday, during the best early season conditions since 2011, about Wolf's season pass price hikes ($150 over 3 years) and how people were intending to switch to a Purg pass during the Spring 2016 sale. Right now I anticipate doing the same, as the Purg pass has grown tremendously in value while the Wolf pass has not- and gotten much more expensive. When I moved here in 2012, Wolf sold the cheaper pass. I think it will be interesting to see how Wolf responds to its primary regional competitor being more aggressive on pass pricing, terrain openings, and longer seasons- Purg is scheduled to have its earliest opening ever on November 21, and as snowfall has been decent with a new storm inbounds, talk is that they may open this weekend.

I'm going to Taos December 21 to 28th, can't wait!

My wife booked her trip, so it's on.

I'll probably travel Fri 2/26 or Sat 2/27, return 3/5 or 3/6.

Anybody want to team up and look for lodging to share?

If not, it looks like a VRBO studio is the cheapest thing, assuming it isn't bait and switch when I ask for a quote.

How many bears does it take to make a sloth? :D

Oh, I learn that this morning in my common core math class.

3 bear = 1 sloth.

1 bumpfreaq + 3 beer = 1 sloth

3 bear = 1 bumpfreaq + 3 beer

Since bumpfeaq is a bear

Therefore 1 bumpfreeaq = 1 bear

subtract 1 bear from each side of the equation and we have following conclusion

2 bear = 3 beer

divide both side by 2

1 epic bear - 1.5 beer

Damn, just hope it ain't a bud light. :D
