Morgins, Switzerland in December??

Hi,

I need some advice regarding taking the family to France or Switzerland in December 2015.

Where to go?

We don't want a big flashy resort. But we don't want it to be too quiet.

A friend has recommended Morgins in Switzerland, but I'm worried it's not high enough and therefore won't have much snow in December (from about the 20th).

Does anyone have some advice?

Thanks BekB

Xmas week in Europe booking this far out is always a lottery regarding quality of snow.  That said there are 2 main strategies that people pursue to improve their chances :

i) Going to well known higher altitude resorts (relative to their country peers)

ii) Going to places which comprehensive snow cannon coverage (but be warned that operating temps still need to be cold enough)

The Portes Du Soleil generally aren't known as an area that delivers hugely early season but if I was going there I'd aim high like Avoriaz rather than Morgins  but then that probably doesn't square with your objective of no big.

Can't think of any easy answers sorry.  If it were easy then these places wouldn't be quiet anyway in peak weeks.

You're right: Morgins (and the entire Portes du Soleil area) is not that high, so that's a risk. Three Valleys or Espace Killy is much safer in that respect. Moreover: Portes du Soleil is famous for the crowds at Christmas and relative quiet in February; most other areas in France experience the crows in February more that at Christmas.
