ST ANTON AUSTRIA - February School Holiday Period. What's it like?

Hello,

We are considering a trip to St. Anton, Austria in Feb 2016. People tell me to keep an eye on European school holidays at this time of year. The Austrian week break is that of 8th Feb (plus weekend before) and the Swiss is the following week.

Has anyone skied at this time, and if so, is it packed with people or ok? We were planning on being out by Tuesday 9th Feb, but I guess that holiday commences on Sat 6th.

Any information would be really great. Thanks so much.

The holiday week does start at Saturday the 6th, as you rightly assumed. That week will probably be very busy, since most Catholic regions in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and of course Austria itself will have their carnival festivities and thus bank holidays on Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect big crowds and prices that week and the two weeks after that.

The thing with St. Anton is that you'll still see a fair crowd of people even outside the school holidays in the high season. So it's not like it's going to be empty before the 6th.

If the 9th is the last day of your trip, then for the last couple of days you can avoid the crowds by hanging out in Stuben or swinging all the way around to Warth-Schroecken. It might also be worth taking the bus to Sonnenkopf.

Just catch the first lift out in the morning and either ski through lunch or take a quick break at 11.30 and get back on the boards for 12.00.

But whatever you do at that time of the year it will be a lot busier on the slopes than a typical US resort. Busier than Presidents day Sunday even.

It'll be busy so think like a tourist and then do something different.  This might involve getting out early and over to St Christoph or Alpe Rauz/Stuben.  Lech has lower bed capacity I think and less drive ins so is always a bit quieter (and just a short bus ride away - then you get access to Warth.  Be prepared to duke it out for the last bus from Lech that will connect to last lift at Alpe Rauz or consider taking a taxi van if you're a group.
