I notice some people use poles in skiing and others dont

Why do some use poles that are great skiers and others dont?  I dont use the ties around my wrist because I watched an E.R. show in which someone was impaled with their pole. What is the safe way to use poles in case of a fall.

Mod note: see later post for threads about ski poles.  This thread is in a sub-forum for snowboarding.

Mod note: good suggestion . . . done.  Perhaps leaving the thread will help other newbies notice the difference between the sub-forums.
