5th week after quad tendon repair - is walking with brace in full extension harmful

I'm a 72 yr old female chat room newbie. I'm also a quad tendon repair newbie. I would love to be a tennis pro when I "grow up" - I tore my quad tendon in a league tennis match (which resulted in my losing the match. RATS).

Question: Three weeks after my bad partial quad tendon tear surgery, I was walking a 1/4 mile (with full leg brace in full extension).

On my 2nd doctor's visit (4th post-op, I was told to limit rehab to hip stretches and quad sets (I had been doing leg lifts, etc). And no more long walks outside.

I am old, but athletic in good health and good balance (and a fair forehand- had a sectional ranking) Why is walking harmful????? Any advice?

Dear Pam,

IMO, you do not want medical advice from the internet. If you think your doctor is coddling you because of your age without considering your athletic background, then get a second opinion from a sports oriented doctor. Perhaps find out who is the doctor for a local team?

The hardest part of rehab is knowing not to over-do it.  Be patient.

I'm only 3 days after surgery. Partial tear of my right quad tendon- fell off a horse. No tear diagnosed at the time. Had massive knee swelling and a procedure to remove the. Hematoma. Months later, repeated swelling and aspirations my ortho recommended a bursectomy to remove the bursa. I was walking, or rather hobbling, about two weeks later and kicked a curb very hard. Felt massive, sudden pain- I thought I'd faint right there. Made it home and thought I had just tweaked things. But when I went to a different ortho, he diagnosed a partial quad year which was confirmed by MRI. Had surgery immediately and am now home looking at the long road ahead! I ride horses, ski, run, hike, etc. and hope to get back to all. I'm 53 and otherwise in good health.

So I'm so glad to find this site and all the advice and experience. My doctor has me in a knee immobilizer for the week and then in a fixed brace for 4 weeks. Because there are some concerns about the skin on my knee ( because of all the swelling and separation from tissue, he's concerned that it wasn't getting sufficient blood supply), staples won't come out until two weeks post surgery and no CPM machine until at least 4 weeks to allow the skin to heal.

How long after surgery did you guys find you needed the strong pain meds? I'm taking oxycodone, baby aspirin, and occasional advil. Icing with an icing machine. Did anyone else wait 4 weeks to do any bending? I look forward to being able to start real PT and feel like I am making progress to recovery. So glad to know there are others out there who have been through this!
