Jackson Gathering SLC Carpool

To all flying into Salt Lake City and heading up to Jackson Hole for the 2004 Gathering:

Please let me know if you are looking to carpool up. It’s about a 4-5 hour drive pending on how you go, how fast you drive, weather, etc. I am working on logistics of buses, renting vans/cars, etc.

If you would like to be included in this, please post here.

Information I need from you:

Dates you plan on heading back and forth from SLC to Jackson Hole. Gathering dates are Friday, January 30 – Monday, February 2, 2004. So do you want to go up Thursday night, or Friday morning, and when do you want to return. Flights will need to be considered.

If known, where you staying in Salt Lake (if applicable) and Jackson Hole.

I also need to know if you are under 25, as rental vehicles are being looked into.

I hope to put up some options and prices in the next couple of weeks.

All I am doing is looking into the cheapest options for people heading up. I will help people get together, set up groups, aim you in the right direction to save a little bit of money. You will need to make reservations for yourselves. I am trying to get people with similar travel plans/interests together.

This list is just a starting point to get some names together to make this easier. You are not bound to this transportation if you prefer to set some up on your own.

Altaskier - thanks for volunteering to organise this.

Share travel SLC to Jackson

* Two of us
* Travelling up Friday morning (attending banquet). Will not have a vehicle so was planning to catch the bus if no other 'cheaper' means found.
* over 25, willing to drive as long as passengers willing to come with me.
* not returning to SLC until the following Friday
* SLC staying Extended Stay, Sandy
* Jackson - staying at Jackson Hole Racquet Club , (the Aspens?)

Because we are visiting for 3 weeks, we will probably have a bit more luggage than the weekend visitors.

Just confirming what WTFH said. Additional info: I'm flexible about leaving either Thursday night or Friday morning. Happy to take turns with the driving (my passengers are generally repeat customers ).

Thanks for arranging this!

AS,

as you know, I'll be driving down from Zootown and would be able to take 1 more person in my truck... unless the happy hand of Fate deals me a girlfriend between now and late January. If I have an open seat, I'd gladly give a JH ride to a person who's flying into SLC.

I'll PM you.

See you in January.

CJ, as far as transportation, we are going to have to wait until more people show interest before we know anything. As far as lodging options, there is info in the main thread.

Stay tuned!

AltaSkier,

I know I had mentioned that I might need a ride back down to SLC after the Gathering but my cash flow has dwindled and I won't be heading to to SLC afterall. I'm still planning on making a generous donation to the Snake River Brewery though.

HTH with the planning. See y'all in January.

We are going SLC - Jackson without a return trip to SLC. The early attempts at rental cars did not result in good options.

I had called Jackson Hole Express about SLC - Jackson transportation - didn't look to bad. $56 one way from SLC airport to Exxon station across from Super 8 at south end of Jackson.

As of 11/14 no one has booked a reservation for 1/30.

Chris.

We need to get this back to the top.

Also, all those interested in some kind of car pool, please know that I will be putting more time in on it come first of the year. We want everybody to get a ride, so need to wait just a tad longer. Thanks for everybody's patience.

I think the bus might be the best option for my travel companion and I. Travelling to JH Friday and back following Friday, plus we won't need a vehicle while staying at Jackson.

So with the cost of 'one way' rentals it is probably not worth renting a car, or else it will be an 8 day rental. But if anyone has a spare seat on the right days and want to share costs, we will be keen.

cjbrowns (2) will also be looking for a one-way ride from SLC to Jackson on Friday.

OK, Bob the Builder & Cedric will be looking for a one way trip SLC to JH on the Friday. I'll be looking to go on the Friday and return on the Monday (although I can change the return date if required)

I looked into rental cars yesterday. The bus is going to be $224 return for 2 of us ($56 each one way), and I priced a car for 8 days at about $330. So we are thinking at this point of renting a car. We are going to be staying at 'The Aspens' 8 miles from jackson so think it will be handy.

I have only priced with Hertz so far, discount rate FRDM. We will have a bit more luggage than most as we are coming for 3 weeks, but we should be able to fit ONE more in the car. Can't make any promises until we book the car.

The price did not include the LDW and some other liability insurance, need to check out what the risk will be without it, I am covered on my credit card for something.

So might be worth checking out car rentals. We got a weekly rate so may not be so attractive for the weekend. I am assuming there won't be any problems taking the car out of state.

SLC has always been the source of some of the cheapest car rentals I've had.

I like to use Alamo, as they are consistently among the cheapest, and they are in the terminal (no shuttle ride like Enterprise and Thrifty).

Hertz, while among the largest and most reliable chains, is usually also among the most expensive.

Check Orbitz for price, then book direct with the agency.

If you have a Gold or Platnium Visa or MC, just decline the agency's coverages and you'll be covered.

What I like to do is make a confirmed reservation (but NOT with a credit card deposit) for my desired dates, then 2 days before, I go to priceline.com and make a bid on the same rental. Usually for a higher car class like minivan or SUV. If I win the priceline bid, then I just call and bag the reservation.
Usually works out well.

Good luck!

xdog - thanks for the tips. Yes I have a gold MC so that should save me some money.

I'll check out those other firms you mentioned. I'll be picking up and dropping back in SLC downtown, so that will save the airport recovery fee, it was 9.25% for Hertz SLC airport.

Ok, worked this over, and this may be the easiest help anybody has had to do:

Julie from NZ and friend look to be getting a rental car.

CJ and company are doing similar.

Bob and Cedric are going one way, best bet may be the bus.

Fox will scrap a ride at the last minute, no problems there.

Gonzo has room for one with him as may I.

Does anybody actually need me to do anything?
