My first post, so pls go easy on me
I hope the OP won't mind me posting my question in this thread, since I am basically looking for the same ski.
I am 6', 290lb (183cm, 130kg). Intermediate, but progressing fast. Coming back to skiing after a 20 year gap, and have 4 weeks on the snow.
This April I had a torrid time on my skinny race skis in the slush every afternoon. Due to my weight, I would just get bogged down. Turning was a mission, and it zapped all of my energy.
A friend talked me into testing Whitedot Preachers (@ 191) and the new 2016 Mantra (@ 184).
I found the Preachers cumbersome and difficult to turn. Everyone says they are great skis, so it must be that I'm just not good enough for them at this stage.
But I fell in love with the Mantra!
Oh my God, what a ski! Their stifness suited my weight perfectly. They felt very light and playful (very turny), yet stable at the same time. In the morning the edge hold was decent, and they simply ploughed through everything. It felt as if I had a lightweight bulldozer on my feet (if it makes sense).
Yet in the afternoon they floated in the slush beautifully and I was able to turn effortlessly, I never felt tired.
I was going to buy them on the spot, but...
A couple of things: they were a 2016 demo model - not for sale.
The other issue: I wanted to try them in 191cm, and they didn't have any.
So my question is this: has anyone skiid them in 191? I looked and looked and couldn't find a single test of the 191s - they were all either the 184s or 177s.
Due to my weight, I am thinking that 191cm will suit me better by giving me more float...but will they be too long? Presumably not, since it's now a full rocker; still, it'd be great to test them and know the answer definitively.
I can see some great deals online on the 2015 Mantras. Does anyone know if there were any changes for the 2016 (other than the graphics), or are they different skis?
To muddy the water further, there are great deals on Blizzard Bonafides, Dynastar Cham 97s (and the old 2013/14 Mantras!). Some of my friends are saying they all might have a better edge hold on hardpack/ice, being cambered skis.
People are saying very nice things about the new Nordica Enforcers, Head 98 Monsters and Atomic Vantage 100 cTI.
So from having a clear idea which ski I wanted (just not which length), I've now gone to being rather confused about the choice
So pls, oh wise epicskiers, help a confused fellow skier by shedding some light and easing/solving my dylemma!
@royal: you say that the new Atomic Vantage 100s are "as nice" as the Cham 97s... does that mean you don't find them any better?
It's the one ski out of the crop of the new ones that I am expecting the most from, so that'd be disappointing.
I'm hoping they're better though, there's a clip on YT where an Atomic's development rider is carving them like they're slalom skis - they looked really impressive!
Also, why were you disappointed with the Bonafides?
That's another ski that am taking a really close look at (owing to all the glowing reviews).
And is that in reference to the new 2016 Bones, or the old 2015 ones?
Any help much appreciated!
