When the surgeon in Vancouver did my knee most of the orthopods around here were using the patella. Now the guys here are using the hamstring. One of the top players from Manchester United opted to fly to Vancouver a year and some ago to have the surgeon who did mine do his ACL and I believe he still does the semitendonosis. You could ask one of them.
I have 2 1" scars and can't find the access incisions for the scope. I was on skis less then 6 months after surgery and as I said have had no problems. To me the hamstring makes sense and healed very fast. I guess that's why.
