Can't Hide SPAM for Moderator Review

Thread Starter

I just tried to hide a spam thread in General Skiing called "Delhi Escort +91-8802779113 Model Call Girls In Gurgaon Russian Escort Service Gurgaon"  I am supposed to have the ability to hide these things and I clicked the box to hide it until it's reviewed by moderators.  It's always worked before, but the thread is still there when I refresh the screen, even though after I've checked the box and hit "Submit" it tells me that the thread doesn't exist, just like it has in the past when things have worked successfully.

Aha! It seems to be reproducing.  Someone should check this out.

I hid a bunch of things this morning and it worked.  I just checked this one out and I see that the thread has been posted many times all in the same forum, so perhaps you have hidden one, but the others still show.

Looks like a mod needs to ban the poster and all threads by them.

This morning someone posted about 15 threads in different forums.  I think I hid them all.

I just hid 2 or 3 of them and they seem to be all gone.  Either that or a mod is also deleting things.  These spammers post a bunch all one after the other.

Looks like you're right.  I just didn't look far enough down the page.

Thanks. I banned and deleted.

Get ready for spam season. :(

Wait, I can't find the link to the beautiful young Russian bikini clad guide for the Everest trip they were going to plan for me. I gave them my credit card so I'm sure they will contact me. I can't believe you blocked them, what other content matters?

I can set you up eleeski.  It would be a beautiful onesie clad Tahoe woman though for a ski Everest trip.  Would that work?

FWIW, we had a couple rounds of spammers in this attack.  Keep on your toes and we'll kill 'em as fast as we can.  Tis the season.

Worse this morning I see......bummer

Guys....don't waste your time on the bikini clad adds,we got plenty of Epic hotties here as it is.

:)

I suspect the reason it did not work is that the spammer is posting the spam over and over again. You got one, but another popped up in its place. You don't need to bother to report these mass attacks, but if you do only one report per user is necessary. We've seen up to 70 posts at a time from a single id if someone is not around to stop them dead in their tracks. I'm stopping them in their tracks when I'm around, but I do have a life. Basically the culprit is using multiple ids and typically gets in 100-200 spam posts when our back is turned. Hopefully, we'll get a better prevent defense some day.

Could also be your computer was accessing a copy from your memory cache?

I've seen them post in every forum, same post, and barely able to hide them as fast as they come. Seems like Huddler should be able to design something. Like three "report and hides" in five minutes means shut down the user? Something.

It was multiple posts. I zapped a bunch of them yesterday - but don't worry I kept the phone number if you need it 😊

Can we throttle new user posts
Ie new users can only post once every 5 minutes

Tyler is working with Huddler on some sort of restrictions like that.

Make it easy. New posters can not be seen until mod review.
The problem is, the moderators are not paid 24 by seven. And we have members on most continents.

Probably too much work for the mods when it gets busy.

What about: Instructions you get when you create your account link to a post that specifies a key phrase, such as "I don't need no stinkin' helmet"? Perhaps embed this in a bot-resistent "captcha" image. Then our filter allows first posts only when they contain that phrase.

Or if we're not using captcha for account creation now, maybe just do that first?

I also like near nyquist's idea.

We've thought about the idea of holding all new members posts for review by moderators, but the list of new posts by the spammers is hideous at the moment and its almost easier to do a "delete all" from a spammer member than to look through the list for a legit person

There could be a query/response method required to sign-up.  I used that on a forum once.  Question was something like "What is the President's Wife's First Name?"

Or "What was President Lincoln's first name?"

Something that some overseas spammer wouldn't know.

Who's the best quarterback in history? :D

I'm on forums where the test question is topic specific.  Here it would be something like what are the devices called that are used to hold you feet to skis or snowboards?  Correct answers would be bindings or binders...

These guys need to slow down posting spam. They're posting faster than I can read!wink.gif

You need an algorithm to recognize the "~~+91-" and block/ban automatically.

Cleared up that mess for a few minutes...
