Just came across this tonight -- had never heard of this place before. Anybody have pics of when this place was open?

MidwestPete - I'd never heard of that place before either - i patrol with some pretty old timers at hidden valley mo, some of whom patrolled at other places before hidden valley opened in 1982.  Next season at our refresher, if I remember, I'll ask around and see if anyone skied there or has pix.

Thanks Squirreljam - I would love to see an old brochure or any photos. It is surprising for its small size the place actually had a chairlift back then and not a t-bar/rope tow/poma lift.

There is a similar abandoned ski area in northern Nebraska called Devil's Nest which closed in the 70s. That place too still has their old chairlift up.

There's another one, much closer to St. Louis, that only operated for a handful of years in the late 70s.  I can't remember the name, I've only heard about it from some of those old timers. It was over in southern Illinois, along the river, just north of Alton I believe.

Coat of paint be good as new...

So sad to see closed/abandoned ski areas.

I visited Rainbow Basin twice in the early 80s as it was the closest ski area to where I lived.  It was always crowded and I always had a good time.  It didn't have much vertical though...probably a hair over 200 feet would be my guess.  I surely have some pictures somewhere that were taken there, but I have no idea where they would be.

Um....I'm from the midwest originally, and I gotta ask: how much vertical could a place like that (or any place in Missouri or Nebraska) have?????

Talk about coincidental timing... both posted at the same time.
