Yeah, I would love to see someone actually get 50mpg, while driving at normal speeds. Best we had was just over 44 on a trip from Maine back to PA. Normal driving gets us about 38-40 combined (which is still nothing to sneeze at...we have a 2009 Rabbit that gets 29 on a good day with the 2.5 gas motor and 6 spd auto)
My wife test drove 2014 Outbacks and Foresters. They were nice, but the handling was more SUV-like than the Golf. Once she drove the Golf TDI, she was sold. We always have dedicated snows, so if the snow is that deep, we either take our 4WD truck (also with snows) or we stay home.
That X1 sounds like a better choice that the Tiguan. We rented one out of Reno on a short trip to Tahoe, and was not that impressed with the luggage capability, and ESPECIALLY NOT the gas mileage, which combined with the need for premium fuel put a nail in the coffin of ever considering one until they bring the TDI here. They have them in Europe, so there's no reason they can;t bring them here.
