So Thursday, the day before the news broke, we took delivery of a 2014 TDI Jetta project. Way overpaid for a crashed salvage car. It will be a while before the car is repaired enough to apply for registration. Hopefully we will be able to get it registered. As a salvage vehicle, is VW going to fix our car? Will we be able to get future registrations? Will we be able to get repair parts? Especially if the EPA bankrupts VW. The disillusionment about the coolness of the car and the uncertainty of the drivability of the car (from regulatory issues not repair issues) has really upset my son.
We got the car as a fun and educational project for my son. That still stands. The mechanical skills, the Bondo work and all the rest of the logistical issues to deal with on a project have teaching value. It's sad that there is no money value likely to be added and he might not even end up with a driver. Weird, unforeseeable and uncontrollable factors can interrupt any project. Maybe that is the real life lesson.
IMO I think you are in good shape. Proceed as planned. Your car will get what the rest will get from VW if it is registered. Might even be some cash in it for you. Have fun. Don't let politics get in the way of a good project.
