1) I am skiing in the NE, primarily a small mountain in NJ called Mountain Creek. I may make 1-2 trips out west but would likely demo while there especially if conditions were good.
2) I would like a ski for 70% groomers, the rest off piste and bumps. Ideally it could deal with up to 6 inches of powder and crud.
3) I ski 15-25 days a year.
4) I am advanced, level 7
5) I am 6'1" (184 cm), 175 lbs
I am looking for 1 frontside/all mountain ski for NE conditions. I am looking for good grip in hard/icy conditions, stability at speed, ability to turn at a range of speeds, and fun. I would like to be able to deal with a few inches of powder and crud, deep powder is not a priority if it means tradeoffs elsewhere. Something that I can grow with as I aspire to be a level 8. I will not get a chance to demo.
I have zeroed in on these 3 skis because they have good to great reviews, seem to fit my criteria, and are on end of season sale. I'm coming from Bandit XX 184cm from 2003, which is a 76 waist ski, and feel that this ski is somewhat heavy and hard to turn at low speeds, grip is just ok, and just generally boring to ski. I'm looking for something that would be a significant step up from them.
Here's what I've read so far:
Powertrack 89 width
Pros: good do it all ski, generally great reviews, pretty stable, decent grip, easy to turn
Cons: 89 width might be too wide for my purposes. More powder and off piste oriented, not as stable on groomers and not as grippy.
Latigo 78 width
Pros: stellar reviews, fun, versatile (frontside and bumps), quick to turn, light ski
Cons: not good for deep powder, rated as more of an intermediate ski (this bothers me)? Might not be super stable at high speeds? Not super grippy?
Blackeye Ti 81 width
Pros: decent reviews, my local ski shop which is well regarded is recommending them first followed by the Latigo, they think around 80 width is better for our area.
Cons: some say hard to turn, boring
Of the 3 above, how would you rank them for me and what length should I choose?
Latigo 177 or 184
Blackeye Ti 174 or 181
Did I miss anything?
Thank you so much!
