Rental cars out of DIA?

Paid $26 per day for an SUV last April, this year I can't find one lower than $70. What happened? Anyone else notice this price jump? I think I will just eat it unless anyone can vouch for one of the DIA to Silverthorne shuttle services?

$70 seems low compared to earlier this year : http://www.epicski.com/t/130467/denver-rental-car-rates

1. You probably don't need an SUV.
2. Keep checking right up to departure.

Even a car that could possibly hold my skis is $50+ a day. I can understand gouging during ski season but during shoulder seasons too? Looking at my receipt from last April it almost looks like a mistake it was so cheap.

Do you use orbitz?    Are you booking over Easter?

I just reserved an economy 4/9-14 for $12/day.  Most of the time the back seat folds down, with plenty of room for my big boards. If it doesn't they've always let me trade.  Hell, most of the time they don't even have an econo and I get upgraded.

Sometimes the tails poke up into the front, but if your by yourself, that's no biggie.

FYI:    Always stop at Applejack.

I'm actually trying to book 4/10 - 4/12. I'll check out Orbitz. I like the strategy of just going with the cheap o car and seeing what they give me. It'll just be me so I can probably cram my skis in somewhere.

Don't rent a car from Budget out of DEN.  First time I rented from them this past January there and they tried to cheat me with a $90+ non-full tank return.  The tank was full when I returned it and disputed it on my Amex.  Again first time in 10 years of renting cars at ski resort airports this ever happened to me.  No way I ever rent Budget ever again.

I used Firefly or something.  Its cheaper.  They give me a car with hail damage and stuff but I drove it almost 500 miles in a few days.  And got like 40 miles to the gallon.

Rental rates out of DIA have been crazy this year.  If you keep checking, you may catch a time when they are low(er).  I ended up with a mid-size car from Dollar this February for under $100/wk (plus taxes and fees) but the same car was quoted at rates from $200 to almost $400 per week at other times.   Remember you can cancel or rebook without penalty.

Booked a Manager's Special through Hertz for $13.50 a day. We'll see what they give me and I'll upgrade if the skis don't fit I guess.

Apparently the trick is to wait until last minute to book.  The SUVs I was looking at for $72+ two weeks ago are now $30 a day.
