My evolving relationship with poles:
At low intermediate stage: used as a rudder/brake when I felt out of control or going too fast in the mistaken impression it would slow me down/correct my course
At solid intermediate: mostly got in the way as I was concentrating on stance/edge/ roation and the other forty things in my head - only of occassional use on very steep terrain
now, as I am ever-so-slightly (and determinedly if slowly) emerging from intermediate into better skiing with more and more skills coming as second nature, I am beginning to really use my poles to develop rhythm and placement
So, proper appreciation of poles comes with enlightened skiing ... poles planting = nirvana?
Never ignore the necessity of a good pole plant ...
