Park City - Alta possibly

Hello All, my wife and I are considering traveling from Australia to Park City next year. Can anyone give us any tips on where to be staying exactly? Park City/Deer ally/Canyons? Also would it be worth staying at park city for a few nights and then heading to Alta? Or should we just be going to alta for a day or two and basing ourselves in Park City?

I don't really understand the layout. Is Park City a town or an on mountain style town? Can you ski in and out of Park City or only from Deer Valley? We would prefer to stay somewhere a little more luxurious but at the same time would like to be in on the action. For example when we visited Telluride a couple of years ago we were very happy to be staying down in the town rather than the more sterile on mountain village.

Thanks so much for any help that can be offered.

Cheers,

Will

We stayed with friends at Park City a few weeks ago.  They had a condo that was walking distance to the lifts, and yet walking distance to most of the town activities.

I'll do some digging and see if I can find a name or location of the condos.

Park City is considered more than a small town.  Population is around 8000.  There are ski in/out lodging options at Canyons (soon to be fully a section of Park City Mountain Resort-PCMR) and Deer Valley, as well as PCMR.

As for Alta/Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon (LCC), while there are ski in/out options there is nothing much to do besides ski, eat, and sleep.  Sounds like you would be content to drive over for a day or two to ski, or take the day bus.

How long do you plan to stay?  Are you going to rent a car?  With a car, that allows the possibility of heading to Snowbasin for a day trip.  What type of terrain do you prefer?

Of the three I would definitely pick Park City. The town has a lot going on and you will enjoy walking round in the evenings.

There is a lot of accommodation that is described as slope side but read the small print and reviews carefully if you are looking for a place that is genuinely ski in ski out.

I stayed at a place that was right by a lift and it was pretty convenient.  I was staying there with a friend and kind of expected a hotel but it was an efficiency apartment with pretty limited [none] hotel type services. It is a while ago but it might have been a Marriot. Roomy and did the job but not that luxurious. I was expecting room service/restaurants/ hot tubs/wellness spas and they were conspicuous by there absence. Skiing was great.

Top Tip Avoid Presidents day weekend.

Much has been written about Park City- I've done a bunch myself- a search should yield rich results- Changes for next season will be the linking of Park City & Canyons via a gondola and upgrading several lifts. Park City is a great town, the resorts are world class, but be sure to have a rental car to drive over to the Cottonwoods or up to Snowbasin & Powder Mountain should you get the urge. Alta is a special place, but there's nothing to do but ski. Park City is a 19th century mountain town- you can ski right into town- and there's a lot to do-  There are lots of Condos in town close to the lifts- tons at Deer Valley that are ski in- ski out, I expect they're pricy, but check anyway, and New Park & Bear Hollow have a lot of new condos that, while not in Old Town, are newer and a short drive to the resorts.
