Actually I'm going to be going back and forth with questions but i have to start somewhere so...

Question 1
Is anyone here eating what some folks call the "paleolithic diet" or something similar?
The concept is that we should be eating the types of foods that were available during our evolution and not the sort of foods that didn't exist.
So...
good = meat, fish, vegetables, roots, tubers, nuts, etc.
bad = processed breads, grains, sugars, etc.

question 2
I'm trying to put together a nutritional program for myself that is sustainable.
I'm trying to figure out a strategy for how to get the nutrition I need for working out when I'm trying to drastically eliminate complex carbohydrates like breads.

For instance, I've been led to believe that eating an hour before a workout is a good idea so that I have energy for the workout.

I might like to have some eggs & bacon (I am NOT trying to avoid fat) but I need some carbs too.
I was told that a serving of oatmeal is good.
So I picked up some whole grain "rough" oatmeal because it's much closer to the form it was in on the stalk. But it's still a grain so I don't know...
Maybe potato?
I've been told sweet potatos are good, but are white ones? I know they're starchy but do they have enough carbs to be useful for a pre-workout meal?

I know that for sweeteners I have stevia. Splenda is a new artificial one that's supposed to be good.
But what about pure honey or REAL maple syrup?
Neither of those have added sugar or are corn syrup based.

Well, the diet i started a couple of weeks ago is basiclly the same thing. Stay away from sugar - pretty much anything with high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup or anything with high amounts of sugar. Occasionally i do cheat a little bit, and eat junk food, but i have been buying the "diet junk food" lately.

For a prework out meal, i would suggest something with high amount of protein and carbs. As far as I know, i think you are suppose to stay away from white potatoes, but i still eat them all the time. I would highly suggest eating oats before a workout (just like your favorite race horse) - maybe cereal or bread.

Consider a meal replacement bar, like the met-rx bars. It may not be close to nature, but they are very healthy and dont contain lots of sugar or fake sugar either. they are about 2 bucks each, but they are by far the most healthiest. Powerbars have too much sugar.

An after work out meal is very important too, lots of protein, i take a protein shake, and cook some vegetables with some turkey or chicken or something. It is very important to get enough protein - its generally recomended to eat 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight per day.

and also, if you arent cutting down in fat, i dont see the point of staying away from breads. As far as I know, eggs are fine - they arent that fatty, its just the cholesterol, but a healthy person should be able to eat eggs every day, i know lots of people who do it. I usually dont, i prefer a high fiber cereal.

Try eating turkey or chicken instead of pork, better yet, eat fish instead. I have turkey bacon, if you expect it to taste like pork youll be in for a big suprise, because it taste like turkey, well - kind of.

I would highly recomend cutting fat (pork) before cutting breads.

But do what you got to do, have a diet you can stick to. I'd rather have a sandwhich than eat bacon, so maybe thats why i'd cut out the fat first. But if youd rather eat fat, go for it.

Well the thing is that breads, sugars and other refined complex carbohydrates are not good for us because of what they do to our insulin production.

I went to a seminar last night to listen to Leslie Kenton. She has a new book out which is based on following a Paleolithic diet.

Very interesting lady, and I would like to look as good as her at 61 years old. She must be doing something right. She is American, but has several homes throughout the world, one of which is is NZ. She has recently taken NZ citizenship and spends a lot of time here because she loves the lifestyle out here so much.

Nakona,

There are very few 'nature' foods today with perhaps honey being one of the very few. Having said that 5 fruit and veg a day with the right amoumt of Protein, carbs & even fat and the right amount of exercise would be my reccomendation.

If you want lasting results then a diet shouldn't be a short sharp six week thing it should be a long term new way of life. On/Off diets are what makes the dieting company financially heathly.

Build up the exercise slowly (e.g. just start walking in the first few weeks, jog later etc) and cut down/out the food slowly (e.g. this week cut out a particular food and replace it with a heathly one). Try different activities until you find one you like.

DB said it so well, that there is no need for me to elaborate! One thing to keep in mind, is the fact that the stricter the diet and exercise program, the harder it is to maintain it. Then, if you go away on vacation for a few days or weeks, you gain everything back!

I don't want to diet, per se.

I just want to eat better with a LOT less complex carbs and modern processed food.

What's the scoop on Chips and Salsa?
Peanuts?
Trail mix?

chips = bad
salsa = good if homemade (no added salt or junk)
peanuts = good
trail mix = some ingrediants good, some bad.

It depends how the peanuts are prepared: dry roasted, etc are fatty and loaded with salt. Personally, I never touch them. Not cause of the nutritional content, I just hate going into anaphylactic shock, it can really ruin a good night out!

I have lost thirty five pounds in route to a goal of forty. I eat 2000 calories per day, I count calories, and try to mix carbs, protein, and a little fat.

How have I done it. Exercise. I run 35 to forty miles per week and swim a mile every day. It's taken me two years to get to this point, however, it's been worth it. Foretunately I have a job that basically gives me summers off and I can train for two hours a day. My wife works in a normal schedule and she gets up at 4:45 to train. I think the key is balancing the "scale" in the direction of calories burned.

I'm looking forward to the day when I have to up my calories to maintain my weight. That will be the true reward!

I also have one stupid treat per week. I usually go with my kid on Saturday night and have a hot fudge sundae. It's a reward for all the miles.
