Extra Large Head - Ski Helmet

Thread Starter

Hello,

I am looking to get a ski helmet, but having a hard time.  My head works with a 63-65 CM circumference, but am having issues with the top portion.  Specifically, the top back portion of my head is where the helmet rests (on the "corners") so all the pressure resides on two points and hurts.

Currently I am trying the Giro Seam XL (it's the largest I have found).  Does anyone have a recommendation for a helmet that is larger on the top (again, the 63-65 CM seam is fine) - or does anyone know of a company that makes custom fitting helmets?

Thanks

Try the smith variance, it has what I would describe as a 'deeper fit' where it is more around your head than sitting on top of it.  Your local shop should have one you can try on.

Thanks for the response. I tried that first and it was "shallower" (for my head) then this one.  I got their largest one (63-65CM) :(

Again, thank you for the idea

My son, who has a large, round-topped head (don't tell him I said it) and is hard to fit, is wearing an XL POC.  He loves it.

(He gets the size from me — but I wear a large Seam comfortably.)

My Poc XL/XXL 59-62 with an adjustable fit dial is the best fitting helmet that I have ever had. I found that the Smith helmets did not fit my big but somewhat narrow head all that great due to too much gap on the sides.

OK, so tried the Smith Variance and that did not work. Now ordered the Smith Vantage XL and POC Receptor Bug 2.0 (POC said this might work).

If that does not work I am going to shoot for the OSBE Majic and OSBE Light VIsor - both on the pricier side, but they also come with a built in visor

Does anybody know of an XL helmet that comes in different colors? My ancient Giro 9 ought to be replaced. I was going to get another Giro because I was so happy with the fit. But the cool colors only go up to L. For XL, only grey and black. What is up with that?

What's up is that outliers put up with what they can get.  It's the same with shoes.  New Balance only makes the cool shoes in standard / narrow widths.  If your foot is wide, you have fuddy-duddy taste. Apparently.

What color is the 9 you have now?  I picked up a 9 at the beginning of this season in matte black.  Could you just get another one?

It's gray and very old. The velcro holding the ear flaps doesn't hold, and the shell is starting to delaminate from the foam on one edge. I could just get the equivalent current model but I want a bright blue or dark yellow one.
There's a nice blue available in smaller sizes.

I have a big melon - 8 1/4 hat size. I have the Smith Vantage XL and it works fine for me.  Could not get most others to fit either.

Give the POC XL or XXL helmets a try. Most come in multiple color variants.

I also had a Giro 9 5-6 years ago, then went to Smith Variant, now love POC. Great fit and super light, but also offer some of the best head protection out there. I currently have the Frontal and had the Synapsis before that. Lusting after the Fornix Backcountry MIPS for my next one biggrin.gif

Measure your head and check the POC size chart. It's accurate and will put you in the right size. POC sizing is also similar to Giro and Smith, I wear XL in all three brands (I measure 59cm).

Good luck on your search!

Well just tried the Smith Vantage XL and the POC Helmets and Armor Receptor BUG Adjustable 2.0  XXL and neither of them fit. The Vantage fit better, but still no dice.  So far the best one has been the Giro seam.  I am going to try OSBE Majik and Light Visor - pretty pricey options (Majik is over 500)

And both OSBE do not fit. Unfortunately, while they look awesome, they are some of the smallest of the bunch. Their XL didn't fit my wife who wears Medium Smith :(

The Smith Vantage XL runs from a 63-67 cm. Definitely looking for something big for this big cabbage. Curious to know what you denizens think of the protectiveness of the full race helmets versus the helmets with the earflap design like the Smith Vantage. Do any non-racers wear the complete helmet anymore?

Check out the Smith Vantage on Amazon. They have it in orange and white methinks.

I tried the Vantage and no dice. It's not so much the circumference (got that covered) just the top of my head (I guess) is oddly shaped.  Almost think of it as a rounded triangle, where the back is wider than the front. Where most people have a more circular top.

I think I will be going to Colorado this year, so will spend some time hunting helmets.  If it can't be found there, maybe someone knows of a custom helmet maker.

Thank you all :)
