Death in the Afternoon! With apologies to Hemingway.
The past 2 weeks have seen two deaths at PCMR and one at Deer Valley - to add to one earlier in the season at Deer Valley. The PCMR victims were men, 25 and 22 years old - both skiers, who collided with lift pylons on low angle groomed runs. One ruptured his aorta, the other sustained major head trauma. The skier at DV was 65 and hit a tree off a groomed run.
The Park City Record ran very discrete accounts in print and on the full electronic version accessible via PC. There is nothing in the version for mobile devices. There has otherwise been absolutely no publicity regarding these tragedies and employees of PCMR - to the extent they are aware of them - are schtum, presumably on instructions from Vail.
In my opinion this is a mistake. They should be widely publicized!!! These accidents are in no way the fault of the resorts or their owners. They should be used as a salutary warning to people that the consequences of foolish and careless skiing may be the death of the perpetrator or, even worse, some innocent third party.
