I know tgat you are considerate skier, but in those cases a porqupine technique is in order. Self preservation for said offending skier is a great motivator to avoid collosion. In tgis case its about you not getting hurt because of the stupidity of someone else.
As to the thought process... This will be funny....oh cr#p they have sharp point sticks raised....danger moron, danger.....no fun.....avoid and find some other poor sucker to scare.
I was taking a picture of a light pillar or something. Not porcupine-compatible.
Also, I never put my pole tips close to eye level, ever. Even poling when I skate, those tips stay DOWN. What is it with these fancy flourishes people do that the tips reach eyeball height??? Don't catch me in a bad mood and do that, I've been known to yell at people.
Some dude was in an elevator with me a few days back, carrying skis (multiple pair) and poles, the stuff SEMI horizontal, with the tips at shoulder level. In an elevator. And then TURNS when the door opens, swinging the mess at my face. I just whipped an arm up blocking it, which of course he felt as it collided. Does he say a word? Not so much as an oops. Then his wife, who sees it all, wants them to let me get off first (she's also got skis being held horizontally), somehow thinking I can get by. All I said was, "Just get off!"
