Well Michel and I planned a 4 week tour of the west designed around our Mountain Collective pass. The original plan was flying into Vegas from Virginia ($1300 total for airfare and AWD rental car) and then off to Mammoth/Tahoe for the first week. Mammoth would have been new for us and I like trying new places. Then it was Utah/Aspen/Jackson Gathering for the following 3 weeks respectively.
Well after incessantly checking the weather we switched the first week to Grand Targhee based on the high predicted snow levels and lack of base for the incoming storm in the Sierra last weekend. We got a great deal on a condo/lift package and off we went. The condo was 2 bed/2 bath and we offered up the extra bed/bath for free to Epic board members and Epic member Lorenzzo and his better half took us up on it.
Upon arrival in Vegas I spent an hour in line obtaining said rental car and was not in a good mood. We arrived at our 1 night accomodations at the Hooters hotel and Casino where the room and parking were abhorrent. Don't ever stay there even though the location is good.
Next morning we drove to SLC to spend the night before finishing the drive to Targhee. Uneventful and beautiful drive that is a pleasure should you ever find yourself traveling that way. Monday morning drive from SLC to Targhee in anticipation of a forecast 8 to 12 inches. Part of the reason Targhee was selected is it was supposed to stay cold throughout our stay as apposed to most of the rest of the west. Hit heavy rain from Layton UT until Idaho Falls and I can taste the powder falling at Targhee. Then when we got on ID route 20 we started having intermittent sunshine and no rain UH OH. Arrived in Driggs ID about 13 miles from the base of Targhee at 6400ft elevation and very light rain (expected). Targhee itself was shrouded in clouds and we were hopefull.
Yesterday morning 10 Feb we get there to find only 4 inches new and impossible visibility on the upper 2/3rds of the mountain but snow that we could see was good.
Today was low 30's temp at the base and glorious sunshine with fantastic snow everywhere except off the Blackfoot lift which I still would rate a C.
A couple quick Teton pics before we're off to dinner with more to follow later.
Michel and I with the obligatory Teton background followed by Lorenzzo with same.
