MUSKEGON, MI -- Throughout the height of the Snurfer's popularity, two regions of the country became hotbeds for the unique winter sport that preceded the phenomenon of snowboarding.


Fifty years after Sherman Poppen introduced the apparatus as a toy for his daughters, those regions -- the Muskegon area and the Green Mountains of Vermont -- remain among the leaders in keeping the sport alive.

Companies in both regions continue to design, produce and sell Snurfers to the public, allowing a new generation of winter enthusiasts to enjoy a sport that would otherwise be lost in the shadow of the international industries of skiing and snowboarding.
