Thinking of spending a season in Nelson next year but might not have time for a complete season, and I know Red/Whitewater typically close early April. So in a typical year when does it start getting good at Red or WH20 and when does it tend to start getting not so good? If I only had 2 months or only had 3 months, just wondering when I should go.
What's a typical season at Whitewater/Red like?
In this day n age there is no typical season anymore. This year has been the worst season for both, last season was ok, the 3 previous seasons were good. They both need about a 200cm base to really light up. If it's a la nina or nada winter I'd say for sure. El nino like this year I would skip. Jan-Feb or Feb-march is your best bet.
Thanks, so not worth coming this March at all? There's no chance of saving things?
And what tends to be the most reliable month for awesome pow between Jan, Feb or March?
There decent coverage at Whitewater, Red less so... the quality of the snow hasn't been very good and the weather trends have been on a repeating cycle of "1-2 days of snow and good conditions, followed by above freezing temps in the alpine for a few days and then long dry cold spells that turn the mountain to crust or ice... This has happened 5 times since the start of the season. We've have approx 1/3 of our average snowfall with the season being half over... I am working at whitewater and we have had two weeks of good conditions and poor conditions for the rest. March is typically a reliable snowfall month and one of the best of the season, but all bets are off this year. Nov was bad, Dec had 1 week of good conditions, Jan had 1 week of good conditions... and the first two weeks of Feb look to be the shits... If the weather pattern balances out a bit then we could stay getting consistently good conditions but so far it's been much too warm winter, so who knows what the tail end of the season will bring... hopefully not more of the same but the deck is stacked against the PNW this year.
There isn't really such a thing as a typical month, but the last few years most of the snow has come in Dec and March... but every year varies.
