Advanced/Intermediate trails [Winter Park]

Heading to WP this week....one thing that has always confused me is some of the Colorado mts designate trails as blue-black. I'm a pretty solid skier and don't care but my wife likes blues and the occasional groomed black run. Question: are the blue -black runs "sometimes blue" and "sometimes black" based on conditions and whether or not it was groomed, or are they just consistently a littler harder than a blue and a little easier than a black?

It means it's between the two. All ratings are relative to other trails at the particular area. We've had trails here get re-rated when there's been no change to the trail itself, only accident levels or grooming frequency.

I think the ideal thing would be intelligent trail signs which change as the conditions change.

Thanks, that's what I thought but wasn't sure.
