Park City trip next week - Advice needed

Hi All,

My wife and are are staying at a ski-in and ski-out for four days in Park City next week.  Normally, with that kind of convenience, I would get us both a three day pass.  This year, with the lack of snow, we may want to keep our options open.  Is the snow at Park City decent enough, or are we gonna want to go somewhere else for a day or two?  My wife is a intermediate skier, so groomed runs are OK.

Thanks for the advice!

Had a little client ski event last week. Skied DV Thu and Alta Fri - Alta was better. I had to get in a car both days - so was indifferent to travel - your lodging choice might trump a hump.

Keep your options open for sure.  Alta/Snowbird is a completely different world with don't miss alpine scenery.  For newbies, most intermediates are much more comfortable at Alta.  If the snow is good at PC, it may not be worth the drive, but don't make an early commitment to save a couple bucks on a couple thousand dollar vacation.

I haven't checked his much PCMR or the other PC resorts got in the last few days, but it sounded like they were supposed to get several inches.

At present there are at least two existing threads about current snow conditions in Utah, so because I'm on my rather lame phone I'll suggest you start there. Click on "new posts" and they should come up in the first page or so of threads.

Several inches? I would love that. I'm heading there next week too and the forecasts I've been reading show "less than 1/2 inch" daily, and 50F temps. I like your forecasts better.

I skied Park City today.  About three inches of new over older firm snow.  Warm.  Moguls were just starting to form from the new snow but you could still blast though it.  Fun.

I thought it skied really nicely and the groomers are in good shape.

park city should be interchangeable with canyons.

So that's 3 days at 2 resorts with enough acreage to find something.  I think that's good enough.   No need to go all over the place, if your lodging is already booked.

There's a bus or shuttle between parkcity to canyons shuttle right?

i just did some testing on snow.com for tickets.  And it looks like you're only saving $4/day by buying a 3day pass.  The one day price seems to be the same ($84)as long as you buy 1 day before (subject to change by vail's computer algorithms).

So you could buy a 2day pass, check out pcmr and canyons.  Then just early on your 2nd day decide if you want to try one of them again  for your 3rd day or go somewhere else..

Thanks everyone for the great advice.  Based on it, we decided not to get three day passes.  If we love our location, we may ski Park City three days, but I do love Alta/Snowbird and I'd like to keep that option open.

Can I bum a ride with you guys to Alta/Bird? Ha ha.

Alta groomers were nice today.  Still good soft snow off-piste if you know where to look.  Weather forecast starting Tue is for more than one wave of snow, 3-5 inches each time.

Skied a bit at Snowbird today, including some blues that I hadn't checked out before.  Confirms my experience that intermediates with little experience out west are happier at Alta.  If you go to Alta, start on the Albion side and sure to find out how to get over to the Supreme lift.

Fantastic advice for someone not familiar with the mountain.  I have skied Alta/Snowbird a couple of times, but that was years ago.
