Let's put it this way-- skiing is not expensive. My dad and I take the most expensive everyday route; membership in a private club, and several expensively done trips out west. All in all this is much cheaper than what we spend on golf. Skiing can be done on the cheap (city run hill etc.). I think it is more of an attitude thing.
Firstly, Golf itself is not a cheap recreation either. There are tons of people who cannot golf nearly as much as they would like and many of them golf very little of what they would like. The reason is the same. Resources of time and money or lack there of. A poorer economy is going to have its affect on anything that is a luxury. In the end skiing is (like many other things we do) a luxury.
With due respect and my above statement in mind, Just because you may be fortunate enough to take the expensive route with your skiing and there are ways it can be done cheaper it does not mean many other people are not still finding even that cheaper route to be too expensive. Respectfully- Just because you spend more on your golf than your expensive skiing is simply not relevant. It has nothing at all to do with whether or not my or any family has the extra resources of money and time to ski even if its a cheaper form of it vs your expensive route. I'm not saying personal finances are the only reason. I do believe there are other factors which play their part as reasons. But financial status certainly is a valid one. And we also cant deny the average family is finding it more and more financially difficult to do anything it use to do as often or even at all in some cases. The resources of both time and money are just less than what they once were. And I'm not saying that skiing is suppose to be cheap. I don't know what its suppose to be. But what it is, is an expense regardless.
Its an expense for a chosen recreation (or luxury) that one would like to do. And when the economic state (resources of time and money) of any family become limited, there are not going to be as many still able to purchase that luxury. Its just that simple regardless of how cheap or inexpensive you might think skiing can be vs what you normally spend or vs what you might spend on your golf.
