Hunter Mtn Trip Report - Mid Week Joy - 1/28/2015

Skiing midweek in the East is a great time. Hunter is a day trip for the NYC metro area. There is a HS6 and a HSQ on 1600 steep vertical feet. They have monster snowmaking and are not afraid to use it.

Hunter's rep is not very good, but I'm in the minority in that I don't mind going to Hunter on Sundays.  I'd rather  go during the week, but my vacation days are precious so my day trip on the weekend is Hunter.  I usually am solo so I get there for opening, hit the singles line and can get a ton of runs in  and bail out by 3:00.  The HS 6 pack moves the lines quickly on the front side and the lift on West is usually ski right on.  Their snowmaking is pretty impressive and they can recover very quickly from a thaw or rain.  Looks even better midweek.

Did Hunter on 12/15/14 and had a great time.  Conditions were good.  That said, I wouldn't go near the place on weekends, especially Saturdays.  Way too close to NYC, quick shot up the thruway.

Stopped by Hunter on the way north to VT recently.  Was there on Sunday because that's what fit best in the schedule.  Heard that the crowds were much bigger the day before.  I was skiing solo so could use the singles' line for the HS6, which moved pretty fast.  By eating lunch early, I got in plenty of skiing before hitting the road around 2pm.

Seems like a good place for a family who have members learning to ski.  Hunter One has lots of options for beginners and cautious intermediates.  If someone is ready for Hunter West (all blacks, high speed lift), they would be more than ready for trips out west.
