Tolls driving DEN - Breck and around?

Hi,

We're coming to Breck from the UK and hiring a car at Denver airport to drive up, also planning to go to Vail and Keystone.

Will we encounter any tolls on the roads on those routes, and if so how do we deal with them in a rental car?

We've done the same trip before 4 years ago and don't remember any tolls but have had a bad experience in the US since then with tolls in a rental car, so just want to be prepared.

Many thanks!

No tolls - you will just leave DIA and head straight up I-70. Have a great trip!

There are no tolls on that route.

If you do encounter a toll booth, have US cash on hand.  We (the US) haven't progressed to the point where all cars have transponders, so almost everywhere that has tolls accepts cash.  (there are a few exceptions).  Many car rental companies will rent you a toll transponder, but I've never bothered.

Bottom line: you'll be fine for this trip.

Thanks - we must have just hit one of the few which didn't take cash on our last trip!

Where was that?

Might have inadvertently got on 470.   I think I recall a sign on eastbound 70 suggesting I-76/470 for airport traffic.

Yeah, E-470 sounds like a likely culprit:

I recently encountered a transponder-only exit near King of Prussia Pennsylvania, so  I was wondering if it was out east.

Anyway, you don't need to get on E-470 to drive from DEN to the ski areas, so don't.

Yea, I was thinking E-470 as well - that's the only toll road in the vicinity.

The E-470 exit is just after you leave DIA. Just stay straight on Pena Blvd (the road out of the airport) until you can exit to I-70, it is several miles past the E-470 exit. Jumping on E-470 to hop over to I-70 will cost you both time and money.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I wasn't clear on 'last trip' - the toll issue happened in California, the last trip to the US, not on the last trip to Denver.

General PSA...

For those who don't know; be very careful with those toll transponders in rental cars.

I just did battle with my rental car company over one of those. I was in Seattle, intentionally used the transponder to cross a toll bridge on the third day of a four day rental. A few weeks later I received a separate billing on my credit card from some company I didn't know. Looked like a penalty of some sort. Called my rental car company and got forwarded to some other company I didn't know anything about; their "Tolls and Violations" partner. So when the billing was explained to me I learned that I was charged $5.xx for the toll. I was charged $5.xx for a service charge (Five bucks sounds a little high but I guess the convenience factor is worth something so OK). Then I had to pay the service charge for each day of the rental whether or not I used the service on a given day...INCLUDING the two days BEFORE I first used their service. $25 to cover a $5.xx toll. Nope, not gonna pay it!

Be careful with those things.

This time next year there will be a peak period toll lane on I-70 in the mountains.   It will just be eastbound from 40 (WP exit) to the twin tunnels during peak times.

I wonder how well the payments are going to work with the rental cars needing to get to the airport?  Probably not so well for the folks paying, and really well for the folks collecting the tolls.  :rolleyes
