We skied Sugarbush MLK weekend. It was seriously cold Saturday - minus 23F at the top early, but beautiful and sunny with no wind. The skiing was great with the whole mountain open and 3 inches of new snow the day before. The cold kept the crowds down too. The highlights were 3 runs off the Castlerock chair, the first time I've managed to ride that chair. The terrain in that part of the mountain is excellent. The snow cover was easily good enough, and the highlight was Rumble - a really great narrow tree cut with some serious steep sections
We checked out Mt Ellen on Sunday, but warmer temps and two broken lifts meant long lift lines. I'd like to go back when it was quieter and all lifts were open as there's good vertical and some really nice runs.
We scored a last minute deal at the Featherbed Inn in Waitsfield, which was excellent. Really nice rooms, hosts, good breakfasts and friendly pets. Would stay there any time.
Sugarbush is one of my real favorites in the East as it has some killer terrain and excellent variety. And its a super nice place to visit. It does seem to have a 'broken lifts' problem - this is not an unusual happening according to the locals. Something they really need to fix.
