Frat boys trash two different ski resorts over the weekend - Page 6

Yeah no pledging for four years means their pledges now will be graduated (likely) when they can once again recruit.  They're basically dead.  They'll have maybe a few members left at that point.

The national HQ will shut it down for a couple years then try to recolonize after the bad press has settled down. They don't need active UM members to crank it back up.  There are probably ample numbers of alums that can show up to rush and get the house back up and running with a new core group of pledges and possibly a few members that transfer to UM from other schools for whatever reason.

I'll bet they will be selling Animal House to pay Treetops.

If the cops can show this was an organized event from email etc they are done.

I'd hope they could identify the individuals involved and hold them personally accountable. Holding an organization accountable will do nothing to teach these "kids" the lesson they need.  They should be required to pay restitution for the damages and lost revenue and at a minimum be performing some community service.

Gee, that sounds familiar somehow. Hmm...

Think JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, etc.

Their leaders got clean away with the biggest fraud in the history of the world.

We got owned!

Well they are pretending to care a little bit but doubt this will go anywhere..

Today's update:

http://www.michigandaily.com/news/sigma-alpha-mu-disbanded-international-board-following-ski-trip

Quote:

The University’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu was suspended and permanently closed by the fraternity’s international board of directors following its participation in a January ski trip that resulted in property damages valued at more than $250,000. ...residents currently living in the SAM house on Oxford Road will be forced to move out by May 3.

Sigma Delta Tau, the sorority that accompanied SAM on the trip to Treetops Resort in Gaylord, was placed on a two-year disciplinary suspension by the University.

Four other Greek life chapters also faced sanctions for damages to the Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs during the same weekend, but the University’s disciplinary proceedings determined those damages were not intentional.

So, the frat boys are being kicked out of their house, although not until after the end of the school year - The UofM winter semester is over by May 3rd.

Everyone in that Fraternity and Sorority should have been expelled along with the the disbanding of the houses. Then you would see names coming out.

Did the resort hotel management not make each individual occupant register for each room?  Pretty sure that pressing criminal charges would result in the press having access to the names of those charged via the freedom of information act.

Easy, there.  How about everyone in those houses that went on the trip?  I would bet money that not every single member of the houses went.  Disband the houses and expel the offenders.  Anyone who didn't go is on their own to find new housing.

Read earlier today that the reason the national organization decided to permanently disband the chapter was that the chapters leaders refused to turn over the names of those involved.  Nothing like accountability...

I agree.  The threat of expulsion should loosen some lips.

A few choice quotes:

Quote:

Otsego County Prosecutor Michael Rola said in an e-mail Tuesday, "I am currently awaiting some additional information but hope to make a charging decision by the end of this week."  - http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/03/18/partys-frat-ski-resort-rampage/24943201/

Quote:

"When the incident first occurred, the fraternity's board took immediate and decisive action by suspending the chapter from all activities until a full investigation could be conducted," ...

"As a result of that process, a membership review was conducted and most of the senior members of the chapter refused to participate."

"It is regrettable that these vandals, as well as the officers of the chapter decided that avoiding personal accountability and/or university sanctions took priority over the welfare of the entire chapter; their lack of cooperation led to the university's withdrawal of recognition of the entire chapter for a four-year period. Sigma Alpha Mu worked in cooperation with university officials and regretfully agreed with their request to close the chapter." - http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2015/03/sigma_alpha_mus_international.html

Reading between the lines, I see the frat boys being advised by their attorneys to clam up as they're facing criminal charges.

Charges were filed today - the president and treasurer face misdemeanor charges for organizing an event that allowed underage drinking, and an unnamed member  faces felony destruction of property charges. Presumably he will be named after he's  arraigned.  The prosecutor expects to charge others before it's all over.

Quote:
The investigation is ongoing and Rola (the prosecutor) has pledged to charge all those involved in the vandalism. "When persons commit crimes in large groups, and it's not caught on tape, it can require extensive additional investigation," he said, adding that he anticipates charging more students soon.

The news is coming in on the plea deals these frat brats are getting.

U-M Studen Accused of Resort Vandalism Pleads Guilty of lesser charge

This is one of the three arrested and he's getting off with a plea of less than 1000.00 in damages for a case that is $500,000.00 in damages. :dunno

It's not economic division that embitters, it's the sense of a lack of fair and equal justice before the law that breaks down societies.

Maybe they'll be pro-rating the damage and charging 499 more assholes.

so, not even a felony conviction.  It would find it much more disheartening if I didn't work at my local courthouse and see the condoning nature of our criminal justice system on a daily basis...well at least 5 days a week.  And, that first deal will likely set the tone for those that follow.  betcha when its said and done, all those kids' families will spend more money on lawyers than it would cost to pay for the damages done had they collectively endeavored to at least take financial responsibility for their criminal behavior.

its a shame that the resort, their insurers, and ultimately the resorts' customers will pick up the tab rather than the perpetrators especially since they and their families likely have the ability to pay restitution.

Maybe not, Dad might be having to cut back on Barrrett-Jackson spending a little to pay the latest round of LIBOR fraud fines ($5.8 billion so far).  None of them will see even an hour of jail time or community service..  Ya, justice and paying your debt to society differs greatly by social and income class.

Rich Californians balk at limits: ‘We’re not all equal when it comes to water’

Being rich does seem to bring with it a sense of entitlement and being "above it all", law or otherwise. The end product is a lot of people like this...

( She'd fit right into the group that destroyed that ski lodge, don'tcha think? )

And regarding those frat boys I find it amazing and disgusting that apparently no individuals are going to be held accountable in any meaningful way.

But sadly, not surprising.

I have been lurking here for quite some time and decided to finally register and start posting today.

I live all of about 5 minutes from the Highlands so this story has been big news around here every time there is a new development.

Another former fratboy was sentenced last month and while it was slightly (very VERY slightly) harsher than the one posted upthread I guess it's something.

http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2015/10/06/ex-michigan-frat-member-probation-treetops-vandalism/73459262/

100 hours of community service and $5400 or so in fines and court costs.  If that isn't a slap on the wrist I'm really not sure what is.

Also, I never could figure out how the damage got so bad before someone called the police to break it up.

Good old SAMy. This what some of us call "a shanda fir di Goyim."

Maybe the property owners or their insurance companies will sue civilly.
