Help Deciding Western Trip Jan 24-31

I have a SLC trip planned for next week, but the recent forecast has me scared. I have a bit of flexibility in my plans, so I'd I change location, where should I go?

The PNW and Tahoe look to be trapped under the same high pressure as Utah.

Colorado seems like a safe bet, with some nickle and dime storms that may over perform.

I'm having trouble finding anything mid term for the Northern Rockies (ID, WY, MT). Anybody have any links?

Thanks in advance for the help.

What's the forecast? Thought they they just had snow.

Jackson/Targhee are slightly above average for the season as is Whitefish.  Colorado as you mentioned is in good shape so a fair amount of choices.

Forecast for the next 10 days continues to look bleak with no appreciable snowfall in sight.  As we head into February.  The PNA, which has been positive most of this winter, could flip negative and the MJO could be in more favorable phases.  That may be the catalyst needed for a pattern change.  Next week the ridge to our west moves directly over us with VERY WARM temps likely, especially in the mountains.  Spring skiing in January returns.  Ugh.

I don't mind spring skiing, I'd just prefer not to fly across the country and spend a thousand dollars to do it.

I can make the best of a bad situation if it comes to it.  It's just that since I have the flexibility, I'd like to make an informed decision.

One limitation that I failed to mention is that I'm flying Southwest.

It's a 4.5 hr drive from SLC to Jackson.  Am I crazy for thinking of driving up there?  Anybody have any links for the 7-10 day forecast there?

If Utah's forecast to be that warm, I would assume most of the west will be under the same high pressure.
I like spring skiing, but if you don't, you might be better off to delay, than to change this late?

While I could, the rest of my party is locked in.

I think I'll drive up to Jackson for the beginning of the week, and then play it by ear.  They may get a dusting of snow over the weekend, maybe it'll overperform and hopefully the spring skiing will be more limited than Utah.

I have nothing against spring skiing.  I just like to limit it to the spring, and especially not after I spend a thousand dollars to fly across the country.

In the same boat.  Arriving in SLC on Friday for a week with friends.  Planning on having a good time regardless.

I drove with friends from SLC to JH last year.  Plan on a bit more than 4.5 hours, even with clear roads.  We skied at JH/GT for 4 days then went back to SLC for more skiing.  Opted not to ski on the days we drove.  Considered doing the same this year, but decided that having more ski time and less travel time made more sense since there are others we know who are around SLC next week too.  Got a nice VRBO for a lower rate staying 7+ nights instead of only 4 nights.

Flying to SLC? I suggest skiing at Alta/Snowbird first and then if it is not to your liking drive to Jackson Hole.

One of the things that I like about Jackson Hole is the town of Jackson, about 20 minutes from the skiing, has the summer as the main tourist season because of nearby Yellowstone Park and thus rooms in the winter are cheap.

Easier said than done when traveling with others, as well as meeting up with others on a slightly different schedule.  What I learned from planning this year's mid-season trip is that if want to snow chase then better to have only 1-2 other people involved.  Also should plan on staying in a motel, not a condo/house.

Only figured out this season that driving to Aspen from SLC is not out of the question if going to give up a ski day any way.  For someone with the MCP, that's worth remembering.

The same thing applies when driving from Aspen to Jackson Hole.

I will be doing a MCP circuit starting around Feb.16: Snowbird/Alta--Aspen--and then J.H. in time for the Gathering. Jim and Michelle Giddyup are doing the same circuit and Jim has started a thread on the topic.
