Sure. The ones with foot rests give my legs a rest on long lift rides. That's helpful.
I had a guy next to me catch a tip shortly after loading and do a summersault off the lift - this was a triple chair and he came off so cleanly that the person on the other side didn't notice until I commented on it. He was unhurt, but with the bar he probably would have just lost a ski, although it's possible he might have broken or ripped something if the ski didn't come off. Not entirely sure about this one.
And when I sit in the middle of one of those six- or eight-seater chairs with a bunch of strangers I like to have the bar 'cause I have no idea what those people are going to do.
So, yeah, they are helpful. Sometimes.
