I was about to get a pair of Altai Hoks because I think they would suit backcountry deep snow forest travel well, but I kept reading that they are meant for those who don't ski or don't care to learn the skills of skiing. Well, I do ski and am thinking maybe a true ski would be better for me? After reading this, I am wondering if they would be able to do anything that something like a 175cm pair of Karhu Guides (fat waxless backcountry ski) couldn't.

For what purpose might you choose one over the other? Would the Hok be safer due to its short length and slow speed?
