staying at snowbird UT my first time this weds - sunday.

we can pay 35$ more to ski alta any day. Which days should we do this?

if it snows heavy do we stay at snowbird or go to alta? weekend difference in crowds for saturday?

my girlfriend and I are pretty good black / groomed downhill skieers on the east coast. And B- mogul, glade and powder skiers (with an effort to improve as weather permits).

we wont have a car but we are staying at "the lodge at snowbird" so i think we can walk to alta.

Thanks

You won't need to walk to alta, there is either a bus, or if you already have snowbird tickets, you upgrade for the day at snowbird ticket window, and then take the lifts and trails that will take you over to alta (you can take the bus home if you don't want to cross back on your skis).  (don't lose your tickets or stubs).

Read the snowbird guide and alta guide.

If you're staying at snowbird, don't be shy to ask the staff questions especially stuff like how to get to alta.

Ski snowbird at least 2days, then try alta, especially if you want a change of pace or more casual groomers to rest your sore legs (but still be on the mountain).

Of course there is also tons of expert terrain at alta, but I think you would use the Alta day for the groomers, as snowbird's groomers are more limited.  If you like it, of course you can go more days to alta and decide.

When Mineral Basin is open, going between SB and Alta is easier for a first-timer.  Especially someone who isn't comfortable in steep, tight trees.  Skiing back from Alta to SB on the Wildcat side is not to be taken lightly.

Whether or not Sat crowds are an issue for you at SB depends on what lifts you want to ski.

When do go over to Alta, be sure to figure out how to go over to Supreme from the top of Sugarloaf.  Nice places over there for exploring powder right next to a steeper groomer.  If you can hook up with someone for the little hike to Catherine's, that could be worth the effort too.  If you keep going, can avoid the cliffs completely.

...but 14-20 by tomorrow, at least at Alta, and at SB/Alta elevations the snow is preserved well unless it's tracked out. It's hard to tell how hard it'll be hit by powder hounds tomorrow, but I'd be up there if I could. mad.gif

Alta reports 19" by 4:30 today, though they always seem to under-report. Snow showers tomorrow could mean free refills if they set up well!
