As we had to get back to Summit County from Wolf Creek, we stopped for a day at Monarch, near the town of Salida. It's a small ski hill, roughly 1000ft vertical served off 3 main lifts. We soon discovered some excellent terrain though, and the base was deep enough to cover more or less all obstacles, making for some excellent tree skiing off the Garfield chair. There's a decent sized area of hike-to terrain which we didn't get to as the weather closed in by lunch time, but that would be a priority for another trip. All in all, a great little ski hill.
Sunday we skied Copper, which was an excellent choice. Post NY Holidays crowds were non-existent - we literally skied on to every lift all day. Early on the groomers were great - soft an carving beautifully. We then skied a lot of bumps and trees off the Triple treat chair, where the snow was super soft, the bumps well formed, and there were no people at all. Amazing. I wish Summit County ski hills were like this more often ;)
